English Premier League Matchday 2 Kicks off as Aston Villa host Everton at Villa Park. The opening weekend last week saw Man Utd fall at home to Brighton. EPL Matchday 2 will feature London rivals Chelsea versus Tottenham.
The EPL has 7 fixtures for Saturday, 2 for Sunday then 1 on Monday night. Here are the fixtures for the weekend.
Fixtures for Saturday 13th of August 2022.
Aston Villa vs Everton(12:30): Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard said his side “had themselves to blame” following their 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth on the opening weekend of the new Premier League (PL) season. Everton this weekend to alleviate some of that pressure, a team Villa first met back in 1888. Going into this clash, he should take comfort from Villa’s strong recent H2H record against their Merseyside visitors, avoiding defeat in the last six H2H EPL clashes (W4, D2).
Arsenal vs Leicester City(15:00): A new Premier League (PL) season brought around a change in fortunes for Arsenal, who not only secured an opening-day victory over Crystal Palace (2-0) but also secured a first league clean sheet after ten games without. squandering a 2-0 lead at home to Brentford in their 2-2 EPL curtain raiser was a far from ideal start for Leicester. As the only PL club not to make a summer signing so far, it’s hard to find a silver lining for Leicester at the moment.
Brighton vs Newcastle(15:00): Brighton kept the good times rolling by springing the shock of the opening weekend with a 2-1 win away to Manchester United, their first-ever victory at Old Trafford. That result in itself has arguably already met one of manager Graham Potter’s goals for the 2022/23 season. The chances of the Seagulls maintaining altitude seem strong as they have never lost an EPL home game against Newcastle United (W2, D3).
Man City vs Bournemouth(15:00): After the marquee signing Erling Haaland scored twice, City fans now get to see him in action at home for the first time and they will expect goals as newly promoted Bournemouth visit. Bournemouth’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa showed they’re paying no attention to pre-season predictions. “My message to the players was to embrace the challenge,” manager Scott Parker said, days before club stalwart Adam Smith signed a new contract.
Southampton vs Leeds(15:00): After suffering a 4-1 hammering at Tottenham on the opening weekend of the season as they welcome Leeds to St Mary’s. The prospects of that appear slim considering the Saints have not won their first home game of a Premier League campaign since 2004/05 (D6, L4 since). Leeds meanwhile had a winning start to the campaign, beating Wolves 2-1 at Elland Road. It was a good start to try and forget what was an underwhelming campaign last time around.
Wolves vs Fulham(15:00): Wolves made a sour start to their Premier League (PL) campaign with a 2-1 loss to Leeds. They will now be looking to avoid a repeat of last season when they lost their opening three games. Fulham produced an impressive 2-2 draw against Liverpool in their PL curtain raiser, avoiding an opening-day defeat for the first time in three PL attempts, with striker Aleksandar Mitrović netting both goals against the Reds.
Brentford vs Man Utd(17:30): Brentford’s manager sang the praises of all five substitutes used in their come-from-behind Premier League (PL) 2-2 matchday one draw at Leicester City, in what was the first time in more than two years that the club had rescued points from a two-goal deficit in any competition. Amongst the many issues, ten Hag was brought in to address is dramatically improving on what finished up last season as United’s poorest PL travelling record in the 21st century (W6, D5, L8), after ending that campaign with six consecutive away PL defeats.
Fixtures for Sunday 14th of August 2022
Nottingham vs Westham(14:00): With both sides looking to get off the mark following matchday one 2-0 defeats. This fixture has a long-standing history, dating back over 100 years but these sides haven’t met since 2014 when Forest ran out 5-0 winners in the FA Cup.
Chelsea vs Tottenham(16:30): Chelsea’s 1-0 Premier League (PL) matchday one win over Everton came despite a less-than-spectacular attacking performance but it was a case of doing enough on the day to earn all three points. Tottenham Hotspur as they’re unbeaten in seven EPL H2Hs (W6, D1), mainly because they conceded just once during those meetings.
Fixture for Monday 15th of August 2022
Liverpool vs Crystal Palace(20:00): The Reds 2-2 with Fulham represented a far from ideal start. Twice fighting back to salvage a point meant Liverpool have conceded first in their last five EPL matches. Crystal Palace got off to a bad start by losing 2-0 to Arsenal, making them one of five teams who failed to trouble the scoreboard across the opening weekend.
