Enugu State Govt Declares 2022 Edition of FFTWC Open

The Enugu State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mr. Ugonna Ibeh, has declared open the 2022 edition of the Flowing Feathers Tourism Writing Competition. (FFTWC).

The Tourism Writing Competition is an annual competition organised by Jands Travel Network (JTN)

Declaring it open on Sunday in Enugu, Ibeh said that the writing competition on tourism is a good one, as it would expose the students to the rich tourism potentials of the state and the country.

The commissioner stressed that the competition is coming at a time when the government is diversifying its economy away from the crude oil, adding that tourism can earn the nation more revenue, if well harnessed.

He commended the Jands Travel Networks for organising the FFTWC, which he noted will shift the attention of students, who will participate in the exercise, to tourism, and pledged that the state government would ensure the competition is successful.

Earlier, the Convener of the event, Mrs. Chioma Obi, said that tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the world with a GDP of just over 9% in 2009 and an annual growth of 4.4%, contributing billions of dollars to the global economy.

Obi hinted that Nigeria is a potential tourist paradise which boasts of good tropical weather, variety of wildlife, awe-inspiring waterfalls, historical relics, captivating beaches, and hills as well as the warm-hearted, peaceful and culturally active citizens.

“This gives us some knowledge about the importance of the tourism industry and the education sector to the growth of a nation.

“The introduction of tourism to schools with the use of a different form of education asides the classroom to enlighten school pupils on the basics and importance of the sector is the aim of the FFTWC.

“The competition will help to ensure that the future leaders are aware of the importance of the tourism and make them willing and ready to invest their time, knowledge and skills in correcting the pitfalls that plague the sector.

“To reduce the high rate of vices recorded among our children by keeping their minds busy with innovative and creative ideas and activities.

“To preserve and promote the culture of creative writing which has produced notable names from our society like Chimamanda Adichie, Wole Soyinka and, and ensure that it doesn’t go into extinction amidst the global trending technological advancements”, she added.

Obi urged the intending participants to get their forms through phone numbers, which are available on the organisation’s social media platforms.

She stated that the competition comprised of two categories, the junior category for children between 10 – 13 years and the senior category was for teenagers 14 – 17 years of age, noting the competition would close by 30th of June after which the judges would begin to look at the writings and then organize a defence session for the writer -competitors.

Also speaking, the State Secretary, National Association of Proprietors Private School (NAPPS), Mr. Nelson Agu, said the association was happy with the Tourism Writing Competition, which he argued would help in the development of the writing skills of their students.

Agu said they would mobilise and encourage private schools in the state to register their students for the Flowing Feathers Tourism Writing Competition.

The event was witnessed by many dignitaries including the Corporate Affairs Manager, East of the Nigerian Breweries Limited (NBL), Iyom Joy Egolum.
