3 Past and Current SUG Presidents Who Made Headlines In 2021
Students Union Government Presidents are generally the highest-ranking officers of a student union in Higher Institutions who are often referred to as spokespersons of the entire student body. The president has the duties of overseeing his or her association’s efforts on student activity events and planning, school policy, as well as communication between the school management and the student body.
In 2021, some past and present Students Union Government Presidents came to wide recognition beyond their University setting, marking headlines due to certain deeds and accomplishments. In this write-up, we’ll be looking at the three former and current students activists who trended in this year.
1. Abubakar Zahra
Abubakar Zahra came to wide recognition after emerging as the first female Students Union Government President of Kogi State University also known as Prince Abubakar Audu University, PAAU, a state owned University founded in 1999. According to an interview with Vanguard, she made it known that she competed with about 8 other male students and won the election. Her victory trended on social media and also made headlines in top news sites.
2. Noble Eyisi
Noble Eyisi, who was a former Student Union Government President at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State in 2015, also trended in 2021 after it was disclosed that he completed his master’s with a distinction in International Commercial Law from Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. The Nigerian previously graduated with first class honours from the University of Hull in 2019.
3. Muhammad Mukhtar Umar
The Students Union Government President, Muhammad Mukhtar Umar shook airwaves after photos of him arriving on campus in a white Mercedes Benz with almost half a dozen security men accompanying him surfaced online. The development captured the eyes of top media platforms and his photos went viral sometime in November.
The University management later reacted to the update saying that the said pictures were taken when students of criminology and security studies department, during their week, put to practice how to protect high profile personalities by bringing the SUG president to the occasion in that manner.
